Great podcast, guys – can’t wait to hear more!

This question bothered me a LOT as a pre-teen sporadically attending church with my grandmother. All the transcriptions through history, and the many translations of the Bible upset me – if this was the exact, transcribed word of God, then what does it become if even a single word is changed by mistake or translation? As a word-focused kind of person, the difference between “set you free” and “make you free” in two different translations made me crazy! Those are two different concepts – which at that time was super huge to me. The church preaching absolute, no mistakes, divine word was actually a hindrance to my belief, which I was surely struggling with. I wanted to believe, in my heart I believed, but my mind was doubtful.

Coming to true faith as an adult I feel a lot differently. There are still the questions of the child in me, but these questions don’t bother me in the all-encompassing way they once did. I have faith that the Bible will tell me what God wants me to know, and that is enough for me. I don’t believe it’s the only way God speaks to me. I also view the Bible as rather fluid and malleable in a way – God will use a single verse to tell me what I need to hear and someone else what they need to hear – and those messages may be completely different to each of us. And it might teach me something else the next time I read it. It’s a pretty cool book.

Michelle,
Thanks for the great comment. I think you’ll find our next episode a bit helpful. Of course, 20 minutes is hardly enough time to deal with all of your possible questions, but in the episode this coming Monday we’ll be discussing Bible translations. We even each talk a little about how our own spiritual growth has take place along side the journey of understanding more of what the Bible is and how it came to us.

In short, don’t be too bothered by the man translations. That’s always the nature of translating from one language to another – especially an ancient language no one speaks any more. It’s a tricky process that can also be made difficult by different manuscript traditions.

Finally, our hope is to occasionally do Q & A episodes. Be sure to submit any questions you have when we start taking them. We’d love to help out!

Tom
