The Marx Brothers & Duck Soup

Classic Movie Gush Logo

Author Melissa Tagg and myself love old movies and started making videos about a couple of them earlier this summer. After a positive response and some retooling we are back with a weekly feature called CLASSIC MOVIE GUSH.

We put the Marx Brothers in our sights this week and watched Duck Soup which critics say is the best of the brothers bunch. I’m not so sure.

Questions for you.

1. Do you have a favorite Marx Brothers movie?

2. Does anybody prefer The Three Stooges to Groucho, Chico, and Harpo (and Zeppo)?

Since I mentioned this in the video, here is a little taste of Chico on the piano and Harpo on the harp.

Classic Movie Gush is a regular feature in which we revisit/introduce classic movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Catch up on all the movies we’ve talked about by visiting the Official Classic Movie Gush Page.

Thanks for adding the music videos, that was cool. I’m not a musician, but even I can see how Chico’s fingering is interesting, haha. It looks like he’s having fun with it, for sure! We were a Three Stooges house when I was a kid, and I’ve never seen anything but clips of the Marx Brothers. I’ll have to check out some of their films though. I’m a sucker for slap-stick comedy, but my favorite is really word play and clever dialogue.

Speaking of clever dialogue, I had to watch this on Youtube because I can rarely get videos to play on my phone off your blog. So I saw on there that you guys also just did Bringing Up Baby, which is one of my top favorite films ever. Ever, ever! I think that’s the film that made Katharine Hepburn my favorite actress; she really is amazing. And Cary Grant has some of the best lines in that movie!! So happy you guys did that one. 🙂

How about doing Stalag 17? It’s another of my most favorites, it’s so awesome, I love it. It’s based on a play written by two guys who were prisoners of war at Stalag 17b during WWII. There’s some interesting history there too: with the actors, William Holden’s Oscar for his role, and the lawsuits claiming Hogan’s Heros was based on the film.

First off, sorry about the jacked up comments section. Continuing issues on that front. The site will be overhauled here in coming weeks.

Yup, Bringing Up Baby is classic and we just posted that one. I haven’t seen Stalag 17 but it’s already added to our master list. Thanks!
