The response to The Monuments Men has been a mixed bag of excitement and meh. Regardless of what the movie did or did not accomplish cinematically it does two important things of which I’m a big fan.
1. It educates the world about historical events.
2. It helps us wrestle with difficult questions about life, culture, and the value of created things.

Blech. Cinematically it was such a disappointment. I was tempted to walk out and get a refund. As far as educating people, I feel it really only scratches the surface. There’s a documentary on Netflix called “The Rape of Europa” which gives a much broader and deeper picture of what really happened, beyond just the few “monuments men.” Not only that, but it kept my interest and did a better job at posing/wrestling with the “which has greater value?” question.
Yeah, it was disappointing. Just kind of dull. I’ll check out that documentary. Netflix docs are some of my favorite things.
