A few years ago my brother-in-law asked me if I had seen the 60 minutes interview with Tom Brady and his striking comments about the emptiness he felt despite reaching the pinnacle of success in his craft.
Every time I see this short clip my heart sinks. If you’re really in a hurry just skip to :48 seconds.
I’ve heard Ravi Zacharias say that meaninglessness doesn’t come from an abundance of pain but rather from an abundance of pleasure. Most of us can always hold onto the belief that things will get better someday, but what happens when we get everything and still feel empty?
Like Brady, many people exist with the constant thought that, “There’s gotta be more than this.”
Only God is big enough to always provide ultimate satisfaction in this life. We were made to be in relationship with the personal God who made us that way. Until we find that connection everything else will come up short.

We used this interview excerpt in a camp devotional last summer. It’s so heart-breaking. I so badly want Tom and millions others to find the answer to that “more than this” hole.
Also, love the Ravi quote. Was gonna spell his last name just then but was too lazy to scroll back up and see how you spelled it.
This has blown me away since the first time that I heard this quote. When Tunch mentioned it today it reminded me again that success without Christ is empty.
As soon as he showed it I thought it was the perfect day to bring it here.
God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. And even though I know this, I move in Brady’s direction too often.
I read a really good book last year about this very thing. What was it called…short name, black cover…
Ha, I think I know that one. Undead? About zombies and God or something?
I’m actually encouraged to watch interviews like this because it helps remind me to gut-check my goals and aspirations. It’s great to shoot for the stars, but I don’t want to reach them and be disappointed like this.
I had a similar thought watching this video again this time around. I asked myself what I consider to be the ultimate. Good reflections.
This is a great reminder.
Yep, nothing else will ever be enough. Nice one, Clay!
I think we all have numerous goals throughout life. We can have goals related to our jobs, personal growth, religious growth, our families, our hobbies, etc. Once you achieve one goal, celebrate the accomplishment, then start working on a new goal.
