Time for Classic Movie Gush with Melissa Tagg and yours truly. This week we’re chatting about Some Like It Hot which stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and the amazing Jack Lemmon. The American Film Institute considers this movie, directed by Billy Wilder, to be the greatest comedy of all-time. I disagree but did only recently watch the film for the first time ever. Since I’ve already introduced Melissa and this new series called Classic Movie Gush, let’s get right to the conversation. I hope you’ll chime in too.

(We had a bit of echo-y audio since it’s still early but already have that ironed out in video three).
What do you think is the funniest movie of all time?
Have you ever seen Some Like It Hot?
Classic Movie Gush is a regular feature in which we revisit/introduce classic movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Catch up on all the movies we’ve talked about by visiting the Official Classic Movie Gush Page.

I haven’t seen this one. The plot reminded me of a Nia Vardalos movie, Connie and Carla, where the two girls witness a murder and hide out in drag. Girls pretending to be guys pretending to be girls (with David Duchovny as the Marilyn character). I didn’t realize it was kind of a Clueless/Emma thing, not a remake exactly, but a re-imagining maybe.
I’m sure I’d enjoy Some Like It Hot. I wonder if nowadays we have too much in the way of special effects and explosions and all of that attention-grabbing stuff. Comedies I think were especially better before, when clever writing, great acting and timing was key. So many modern comedies rely on bathroom humor and over-the-top crazy scenarios. Seems like an appreciation for a really well-written scene has mostly gone by the way-side.
Also, Clue is the best comedy ever. It has everything. Raising Arizona is a close second. Those are just facts.
Good point about the simplicity necessary for those early movies. Yes, we have bells and whistles like never before. You use the phrase bathroom humor which I think is the same as what I call raunch comedy. Confession: I’ve come to loathe almost all of those comedies like The Hangover (won’t watch the sequels) and so many others. Never even saw Bridesmaids which was so popular. I want clever writing rather than transgressive humor. I mean, Howard Stern got old fifteen years ago. Why go see the cinema equivalent? Too much good stuff out there to check out and I ain’t getting any younger.
I think every Hitchcock movie has been redone multiple times. As for comedies, Clue is definitely near the top–the greatest screwball comedy ever? Perhaps. But the only challengers in my book are from the Marx Bros. I also love Fletch to death. Great comment!
Raunchy – that’s the word I was looking for! I couldn’t think of it.
I get my favorites and won’t let them go, but I know my “facts” aren’t necessarily facts, haha! I can’t even think of a Marx Brothers film. I need to get out more.
